“I am a woman who lost track of herself.

At one point, I would have explained it as

having no choice but to overwork

and neglect myself and my family.

But now that I stand in a different place,

I hold a different perspective, and I see the world and the past in a very different light.

I was horrified when it was suggested to me that I get humble!

March 12, 20262 min read

I remember when someone I trusted suggested I explore how being humbler could change my life. I felt horrified.

At the time, I thought she meant allowing myself to be humiliated would help me grow.

So I went on a journey to see what humility really is and I discovered it is nothing like I feared.

Pride shows up when we feel we must be right, prove our worth, or guard our image. Humility is the opposite, but it’s not weak or self-diminishing.

True humility is knowing your value without needing to prove it, being open to learning, admitting mistakes, and treating others as equals. It’s grounded, confident, and actually strengthens relationships and trust.

For example, pride might keep us silent when we feel wronged because we don’t want to look weak.

Humility might invite us to speak our truth respectfully, repair what needs repairing, and feel empowered in the process. Pride might insist on being right in a conversation. Humility might listen, notice another perspective, and stay aligned with what’s true without defending the ego.

Most of us don’t recognize where pride shows up in daily life. And that’s the first step: noticing. Where in your day do you feel the need to prove, defend, or control?

Just noticing is powerful. It opens the door to understanding yourself better… and creates space to live with more ease, connection, and freedom.

You’ll be surprised by how quickly you will begin to recognize how pride is keeping you trapped in patterns that no longer serve you.

You don’t need a long list or a heavy exercise. A little noticing can open the door to change.

Here are three simple ways to spot pride and invite humility:

  1. Pause when you feel defensive or frustrated. Ask yourself: “Am I trying to prove I’m right or protect my image?” Just noticing it is enough.

  2. Notice when you avoid speaking up or showing vulnerability. Pride might be saying: “I must appear strong.” Humility might invite you to share your truth respectfully.

  3. Observe interactions where you feel superior or dismissive. Humility might open you to listening, understanding, or treating others as equals…without losing your confidence.

The magic happens when you notice patterns you didn’t see before. Awareness is the first step. From there, curiosity and action flow naturally.

Use this cheat sheet to help you see when your thoughts aren’t serving you, when your emotions are old patterns of over-reactions, and when your choices are actually sabotaging your ability to receive what you want!

When you free yourself from pride, you become more receptive and more easily receive what you intend!
